So many gems here: action, twists, mystery, betrayal, conspiracy theories and a budding romance all set against the backdrop of a dystopian takeover. The characters were great and I loved watching Joey grow up. His progression into adulthood while he navigated the many problems thrown his way was well executed. Dystopian novels usually thrust the reader into the middle of the already-established draconian world. However, Vial starts out with its citizens free, and the reader gets to watch the government take over in real-time through the eyes of the main character, making it unique and interesting to read!
And best of all Vial had me considering lots of things, especially what would the perfect age be to stop aging? 25 I say! And what would it be like for the kids who had to take their vials too early? Imagine being stuck as a child forever… There were other interesting insights as well, but they are spoilers so I’ll leave them out of the review, but I love it when a book leaves me pondering, and Carlo Girardo’s book did just that. Overall, such a great read, and I’m looking forward to book 2!
